Origin Peptides awarded £7.7 Million Grant

Origin Peptides has been awarded Innovate UK’s Sustainable Medicines Manufacturing Grand Challenge

Peptide-based medicines are one of the fastest-growing areas in pharma, used to treat a wide range of conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease, obesity and weight management, cancer and cardiovascular disease. The global market for these pharmaceuticals is expected to surpass $260B by 2030 (per Grand View Research, Inc).

Origin Peptides Founder and Chief Scientist Sara ten Have explained the significance of winning this grant: “This major award enables us to scale our platform for next-generation peptide synthesis, making production faster, environmentally friendly and far less expensive. It also strengthens the UK’s position as a global leader in this fast-growing pharmaceutical category.”

Peptides are the small active parts of proteins. They are used for medicines, cosmetics and materials. The way peptides are typically made is with Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS)

SPPS is one of the dirtiest industrial chemistry processes currently performed. Peptides are essential, particularly in the research and pharmacology fields, constituting life saving medications and facilitating research which will save lives in the future.

Peptide synthesis is expensive, particularly at scale, which restricts the potential applications of peptides. Enzymatic, materials, construction, food manufacture and environmental applications can now be considered as financially viable with this technology.

Origin Peptides is primarily invested in developing our technology. To facilitate others to utilise this technology for their peptide production needs is our goal, to enable greener, cheaper and faster synthesis. “Origin Peptides were approached to conduct proteomic analysis on some of our recombinant yeast strains, having heard of their service from colleagues in the field.
